Aloha December

Aloha! Things have been a little quiet here for the past few weeks, and that's because I was away in the islands for a little while. It is so valuable to unplug and recharge; a trip to paradise is the best way to do it, in my opinion! Here's a couple of snapshots from my adventures!

Now, the holidays are in full swing, and there's lots to do before Christmas! Time to get all my gifts wrapped, cookies baked, and decorations up! Wishing you and yours the most wonderful holiday season and a very blessed new year ahead!

How to Vacation Like A Local

I don't know about you, but when I travel, it's always my goal to experience a place the way the locals do. It's far more fun to try to immerse yourself in the culture, rather than simply camping out at the hotel the entire time. My personal preference is always to get beyond the busy tourist attractions to see the real heart of an area. I love finding a charming restaurant that serves the best local foods, discovering a breathtaking hike or view, and wandering through an outdoor market or festival. The most wonderful travel adventures have most often come from the places that are more authentic than commercial. How do you make sure you're living like a local when you travel? A simple trick I like to use is to think about engaging the 5 senses: sight, touch, taste, sound, and smell.

1. See: Visit the surrounding attractions and main points of interest.
When you visit a particular city or area, do a little research to find out what they are known for. Is it a particular industry? What kinds of building or architecture is important to that area? Do they have any historical sites or interesting attractions that are iconic? Explore castles, historical landmarks, ornate churches, and ancient cities that are an important part of their history. I enjoyed hearing stories and traditions from ancient Hawaiian history while exploring sacred sites among the islands, taking in the beautiful architecture in Italy, and learning all about the history of the Olympic Games and International Olympic Committee at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.

2. Touch: Immerse yourself in the natural environment.
One of the things I love about exploring new places is the opportunity to enjoy new scenery, invest time in nature, or do something outside your comfort zone. While on your trip, take a few hours to go on a hike, get out on the lake, find a secret beach, listen to the birds, or watch the sun rise over the mountains. Another way to immerse yourself in the environment is to attend a local festival or concert. See where the locals go, ask for recommendations, and try it out!

3. Taste: Try the local cuisine.
If you're going to truly experience life the local way, one of the easiest ways is to try the food! Again, do a little research to find out what dishes make up the local cuisine, and be sure to sample some of the fresh ingredients grown in the area. I always look forward to macadamia nuts, fresh seafood, and strawberry papaya in Maui, hearty soups and carefully crafted French cuisine in Quebec, and incredible chocolate and cheese in Switzerland. A fun way to make sure you get the authentic experience is to chat with the server to get the inside scoop on what life there is really like, and if you're feeling brave, ask them to choose your dinner order for you! You might discover a new favorite dish!

4. Hear: Listen to the local or traditional music.
Music is another fantastic way to experience the culture of an area. When traveling internationally, it's so fascinating to listen to a country's traditional music and to learn about how it shaped the lifestyle, people, and their traditions. Music often correlates to significant events in history, and can tell you a lot about the important events or themes in a culture. Don't be afraid to ask for recommendations from locals to find out where you can take in a concert, hear an up and coming artist, or learn more about their musical history.

5. Smell: Take in the aromas of the area.
Scent is a powerful sense; it can evoke memories or experiences from times past. I'm always amazed at how a specific scent can instantly transport you to a certain place or time. For example, the salty sea air brings back memories of swaying palms, crashing waves, and hidden beaches of summer vacation. The smell of eucalyptus immediately takes me back to misty hikes in a eucalyptus forest on the side of a volcano, and fragrant plumeria blossoms remind me of perfumeries on Bermuda. A personal favorite scent of mine is the smell of the heady island air when you land in Hawaii--it is a mix of sweet tropical flora, salted ocean air and bit of cool rain. There's nothing quite like it. On one of my last trips there, I found a candle in a local boutique that managed to create an almost identical replication of that scent. Every time I light it, I'm transported back to that moment. While on your travels, take in the scents of the cuisine, the flowers, locally grown herbs or fresh mountain air.

How do you live like a local on your travels? Have any suggestions for experiencing a culture in new ways? I'd love to hear!

How To Pack For Summer Travel

Summer always means opportunities to travel and explore! There's nothing I love more than heading out to take in new cities and different scenery. I was once the typical over-packer (What? I like having options, ok??), but over the years and trips, I've learned to streamline the packing process and the items I've brought which really alleviates the stress of travel prep. Heading out on a trip soon? Here's a few of my best tips to help you get ready to go in no time!

1. Use packing cubes or compression bags.
Some people have an allegiance to one or the other, but, if you're not using either of them already, this should be an immediate purchase. Here's some good ones that I like. These will change your life--ok, perhaps that's a little dramatic, but they will save you a TON of space in your suitcase so you can bring home a few extra souvenirs or gifts.

2. Roll your clothing.
Speaking of saving space, this technique will also give you far more wiggle room to add that extra pair of shoes or a jacket last minute. A good friend of mine who does lots of international travel showed me how to properly roll everything instead of folding, and I've been a devotee to this method ever since. Seriously, it works so well! Even something simple like socks can be rolled and tucked inside your shoes to save space. Oh, and one more note on clothing, try to pack by outfit instead of throwing a bunch of random pieces into your bag. This will save you the "what do I wear??" question once you arrive to your destination, and, chances are, you'll probably end up bringing far less this way! My suggestions is to pack pieces that you can mix and match to create multiple outfits. I even try them all on and take a photo of the outfits on my phone for quick reference when I'm on the go.

3. Pack an in-flight essentials bag for your carry-on.
This is something that has always been helpful, especially when flights are almost always full and overhead space is limited. Instead of hunting through your carry-on for your headphones, book, snacks, face mask, hand wipes, water, etc., have everything you'll need already packed into a separate pouch or small bag inside your carry-on. Once you board, simply grab the bag, and tuck your carry-on into the overhead compartment until arrival. More space for you, less hassle for everyone else boarding, and everything is organized in one place! You're welcome ;)

4. Bring an empty water bottle.
It's easy to get dehydrated during a long day of travel, and when you're spending a lot of time in the air, it's extra important to drink lots of water. Instead of paying for overpriced water bottles in the airport, tuck an empty water bottle into your carry on and fill up after security. Having a water bottle on your travels will also keep you hydrated while exploring; you never know when you'll want some water on a hike or a long drive through the mountains. My pick is usually a stainless steel option that makes for easy hot/cold use, durability, and cleaning while traveling.

5. Pack a change of clothing into your carry-on.
This has been so helpful to me over the years. Usually when we travel, we're dressing for comfort or perhaps we're wearing our heaviest pieces to save space and weight in the bag; however, those outfits may not be appropriate or comfortable for your final destination. Also, at the end of the travel day, it's easy to feel a little stale, and the feeling of fresh, clean clothes is the perfect pick-me-up! I typically change clothes before we begin our final descent or right when I arrive at the airport. Even if you're not wanting to change clothing right away, having an extra outfit in your carry-on is smart planning in the instance that your bags are lost or don't arrive on time.

Happy adventuring!
Have any travel or packing tips? I'd love to hear! Let me know which is your go-to method to make packing and traveling a breeze.

A Guide to Southside Village

I was recently invited to explore Southside Village with Visit Sarasota as a part of their Shoptember event. If you've ever been to Florida's gulf coast, you'll know it's famous for it's beautiful beaches, vibrant arts culture, and fabulous weather. Aside from the beach, some of the best local spots can be found in the historic parts of the towns where chic boutiques and alfresco dining create the perfect place to shop, dine, and enjoy the day. Southside Village is one of the most charming shopping and dining districts, and it's got a lot to offer for both visitors and locals alike. I've created a guide with some of my favorite places for shopping, relaxing, and dining.

A great day usually begins with a great cup of coffee, am I right? If you're in town, I highly suggest forgoing your typical Starbucks and swinging by Perq Coffee Bar for a delicious coffee or tea prepared with precision and the utmost attention to detail. The laid-back, urban feel of the decor invites you to make yourself comfortable and relax with a good book or meet a friend for coffee and conversation.

Southside Village has some of the most adorable and elegant boutiques, and Blu Home is definitely a must visit if you appreciate stylish home decor and lovely accessories. Their design services provide a creative perspective on custom styling and thoughtful space creation. I love updating my space every season with a few new pieces, and Blu Home's showroom of beautifully curated, sophisticated items was the perfect place to gather ideas and inspiration.

For lunch, I swung by Morton's Gourmet Market for the freshest selection of delightfully prepared sandwiches, quiches, pizza, soups, and of course the incredible desserts in their bakery. A family owned Sarasota favorite for over 50 years, this specialty market is definitely not to be missed. Whether you're looking for something to take with you on a beach picnic, the perfect cake or catering for a celebration, a wide selection of wines, gourmet groceries, or artisanal cuisine when you don't feel like cooking, there's something delicious for everyone.

Marmalade Salon & Boutique is perfect for anyone who loves whimsical, beach-chic decor, and stylish fashion finds. This adorable boutique is brimming over with playful, trendy clothing and baubles. I loved their selection of bohemian inspired dresses, and wanted to bring home one of everything! The salon evokes the sun-soaked, surf culture vibe of laid-back island living, and the sound of happy chatter carries over from clients enjoying a fresh cut and styling session.

If you're in the mood for casual yet sophisticated dining with creatively crafted seasonal foods, look no further than Libby's Cafe and Bar. The contemporary atmosphere invites guests to gather for light bites on the outdoor patio, enjoy a celebratory dinner, host a company meeting in their private dining room, or meet up with friends after work. Each dish on the menu is created with the freshest ingredients, and their selection is sure to satisfy even the most discerning palate. (I highly recommend the Four Cheese & Pear Tortellioni, so delicious!) Their attention to detail and artful combinations will keep you coming back for more.

Thanks to Visit Sarasota for partnering on this post.

Style Postcards from Europe: Floral Maxi Dress

I recently took a trip to Europe (see some snapshots via Instagram here), and upon arriving in Switzerland, we decided to have dinner on the riviera one evening. The view is absolutely spectacular with majestic mountains everywhere you look, an expansive and serene lake, and charming architecture, coupled with the twittering of the birds as the sun starts to fade into brilliant sunset hues. I had picked up this beautiful floral maxi dress a little while ago and knew that this trip would be the perfect place to wear it. The delicate ties on the shoulders, charming floral print, and full ballgown skirt makes it so feminine, pretty, and even a little princess-like! I couldn't help but twirl around once or twice on the lawn just to play with that gorgeous skirt. If you're headed to a special event this summer, this is the dress for you!

What's In My Bag: Summer Beauty Edition

Summer is here, and it's time to switch over the makeup and beauty favorites for a lightweight, more bronzed, beachy look. These are a few of my latest favorites that I'm bringing along in my beach bag, and packing in my travel tote for some summer trips.

Face: When it's hot and humid or I'm headed out to the beach, I don't like to put on a full face of makeup. Instead, I'll start with a quick moisturizing lotion/self-tanner combination and use that as a primer. Lately I've been loving this one by St. Tropez which gives a natural, glowy color without being obvious.

To combat shine and even out my skin, I'll dab on a light veil of this Tarte foundation which is oil-free and all natural. It's great for a long day in the sun when you don't want anything to melt off your face.

Finally, a quick swipe of a punchy lip color will highlight a tan and instantly pull your look together. Summer is the perfect time to bring out those corals and bright pinks. I've been alternating between these two colors by L'Oreal.

Body: As much as I love the beach and spending time in the sun, I'm also pretty mindful of the amount of sun exposure I get. A beautiful tan makes everything look better and is definitely part of that fabulous, beach babe look; however, in order to avoid skin damage and wrinkles later, I like to use a bronzing mousse from the St. Tropez line. The color is beautiful and natural, with a bit of an olive undertone to create a gorgeous glow without looking orange. I use a tanning mitt to apply it and have found the application to be extremely easy and streak-free.

In addition to a healthy glow, it's important to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized. For travel, I'll bring along a tiny lotion with coconut and shea butter that I use on both my hands and body to keep skin feeling fresh post flight.

One of the best things to keep in a travel bag is a small roll of floss; Cocofloss is my new favorite. It is infused with coconut oil, smells amazing, and has the tiniest hint of sweetness to help freshen up while on the road. I have both the Cara Cara Orange and the Strawberry flavors!

Before heading out the door, I'll dab on a little bit of perfume. I'm a bit of a fragrance chameleon, so I've found that it is hard for me to finish an entire bottle of perfume. Instead, I'll often opt for a rollerball that can be brought along for midday touch ups or travel. Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue has been my go-to for the past two summers; it is light, clean, and reminds me of the cool, crisp sea air.

There you have it! What are your go-to beauty favorites for summer?
I'm always looking for suggestions!

Travel Diaries: Christmas in Quebec

Quebec is a charming city at any time of the year, but it's magical beauty truly shines around the holidays. The old cobblestone streets are lined with twinkling lights, trimmed in garlands of pine, and blanketed by a dusting of fresh snow. Locals and guests, alike, duck into quaint shops and cafes to escape the chilly air, while the melodic French language is heard almost everywhere you go. When it's time to venture into the winter wonderland, dogsleds race through the snowy woods, and the jingle of bells is heard as a team of horses pull a wooden sleigh through the swirling snow. Toboggan runs, skiing, snow tubing, and snowball fights are the only activities on the day's agenda until it's time to warm up inside the chateau with a cup of hot chocolate. Come along and explore this snowy winter wonderland with me!

A trip to the basilica of Sainte Anne de Beaupré is definitely a must-do! The cathedral is over 350 years old and welcomes over 1 million guests every year to it's spectacular halls. With glowing stained glass, twinkling rose windows, beautiful arching ceilings, and columns filled with crutches left behind from miracle healings, this place is absolutely breathtaking. One can't help but be in awe of the lavish detail and reverent beauty.

Sleigh rides through the snow are quintessentially winter, and it is worth braving the cold for a beautiful journey through the forest. We happened upon a kind, french-speaking farmer who was delighted to take us on a tour through his beautiful snow-covered woodland. There's something about the sound of jingle bells on horses that brings to life all the cheerful carols sung over the years.

A short drive into the mountains brought us to Valcartier. During the rest of the year, this place operates as a water park, but in the winter, it transforms into a snowy playground for skiing, snow tubing, sledding, and more. I highly recommend snow tubing down the multiple runs that provide a generous amount of fun and laughter.

We stayed at the Chateau Frontenac, which, in my opinion, is the absolute best place to stay while enjoying the beauty and charm of Quebec City. With a rich history of 123 years of operation; beautifully appointed rooms and suites; impeccable, personalized service; toboggan runs; splendid views; hallways lined with rows of sparkling Christmas trees; and a collection of delicious restaurants, this place is not to be missed.

The streets of lower Quebec are something straight out of a postcard. Cheerfully decorated shops, German Christmas markets, and cafes provide the perfect atmosphere for a little Christmas shopping and dining. Visit Santa and his elves in the main square, and duck into Cochon Dingue for a quick lunch. Before you head back to the Chateau, pick up a sweet treat or two from Madame Gigi's where the most beautiful confectionary delights are made in house everyday! One thing is for sure, Quebec provides a bountiful collection of culinary treasures. From charming French cafes and traditional Canadian eateries, to upscale and trendy dining establishments, brilliant chefs will provide you with dazzling dishes sure to delight every discerning palate.

A dash through the snow with your own team of highly trained and thoroughly excited huskies is an experience of a lifetime! As the sunlight sparkles through the snowy trees, hold on tight to the sled while you are whisked off on a magical, high-speed adventure, and yes, you get to drive. Be sure to take time after to play with your sweet and talented canine team to say thanks for the fun! I also recommend strapping on some snowshoes and heading out on one of the nearby trails.

Au revoir, Quebec! You are truly something out of a fairytale.
Have you visited before?
