Beauty Secrets

Amanda from Marshalls Abroad is one of those gorgeous girls whom you feel as though you know, even if you haven't actually met. (Hopefully we'll fix that, one day, Manda!) Her blog is full of breathtaking photos from her travels with her husband, and tales of their life in Japan, but what impresses me the most is her beautiful heart, and after reading this, I think you'll agree with me!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've recently discovered red lipstick. I know I'm faaar behind the learning curve but I grew up playing sports with three brothers, didn't wear makeup in high school, and my husband begs me to not wear any now, so I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes down to it. I just bought my first tube of red lipstick; it's so colorful & fun & reminds me of the classy fashion era when it was commonplace. I'm thinking Lucille Ball, Grace Kelly, Vivien Leigh.
When it came to beauty, I never really thought or cared about it much. {again, grew up with brothers!}
Any time I even mentioned something about wanting to be pretty, or said I felt fat, my Mom & Dad would be furious with me, like I had broken their hearts. Why? Because they told me I was being totally worldly. "You are God's workmanship, created in Him, by Him, for Him. What isn't beautiful about that?!"
I have to confess that I have moments of weakness. We all do, don't we? Isn't it easy to when every magazine or tv show or movie is telling you what it thinks you should look like? But I know it's wrong and a waste of time to be bogged down by such things. Life is short; I want to fully live each moment I'm given! And, nothing upsets my husband more.. my husband who miraculously sees me as the most precious and beautiful thing in this world, the way a husband ought to love his wife! Like my parents did for me growing up, he points me away from my worldliness and straight to the truth - the Bible.

"Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised."

I think it is so easy to become disillusioned with beauty in this world. If we're not careful, especially as women, it can eat us up in a heartbeat. What I've learned is to look beyond what the world sees; to see the Maker behind the made. I believe inward & outward beauty should be appreciated because GOD created it, and to leave it at that for what it is. His purpose.  With that perspective, I don't think about anything other than, "Wow, God, You are truly creative," and then my thinking can move on to more important things.
If you were to read my journal you'd find prayers, scattered throughout the years, to be THIS woman:

Now SHE is beautiful.

Thanks for having me, Candice.. And for letting me talk about a somewhat uncomfortable subject! ;) Whew.
I'm going to go back to my life of little to no makeup, not thinking about beauty, and traveling through Asia with my husband! :)
